Insect Pest Control Starts By Removing Food Supply

Whether your problem is inside or outside, insect pest control can take a lot of time and considerable expense if not done properly and may be deadly to children and pets. The best methods of insect pest control can start by controlling the environment that fosters their growth and gives them a reason to stay. All pests, insects or rodents, need food, water and shelter and although it may not seem to be the case, that is all they are looking for.

One of the most common pests in the home, especially in the spring and fall, is ants. They seem to be everywhere and getting into the house is a simple process for these tiny critters. To reduce the chance of having ants, insect pest control starts with removing any appearance of a food supply. Pet food remaining on the floor or counters can seem like an open invitation to ants and should never be left where their aroma can permeate the house.

Another source of food for ants are children, as it seems they can leave crumbs of food in places in which people would not normally eat. At least once a year, take a vacuum cleaner around all window sills and in corners of closets and especially under kitchen cabinets in which food is stored. During your insect pest control if you happen to vacuum up any ants, be sure to empty the bag before putting it away or they will climb back out and join their colony again.

Some Plants Serve As Natural Repellants

Before trying artificial means of insect pest control, try planting some peppermint around the foundation of your house. Ants do not like the smell and it has been said mice stay away as well. Cinnamon also works wells for insect pest control against ants and bay leaves in your pantry can keep many of the pests away that like to get inside dry food products.

Window wells on basement window seem to attract mane species of insects and putting a layer of eucalyptus-scented wood chips can help keep them out. Once in the well it will not take any time for them to work their way into your basement. If you have several insects crawling around your yard as a means of insect pest control, before applying commercial insecticides, take jar lids and fill them with sweet-smelling carbonated beverages. The insects will love the taste, but the acid in the soda is detrimental to their health.
